Who's Todd & Barlow..?
Once upon a time, many years ago, a young boy was told the most incredible stories by his Grandfather. The characters in those stories were not of fiction, they were well described in the various accounts of youthful fun, games and laughter; they were stories of reasonably innocent laddish mischief in a pre-war Yorkshire village. If it wasn’t messing around on the pit slag heaps ​or sailing a self-made boat down the River Don, it was fishing the local ponds, cricket matches against the local lads or the infamous story of the “ghostly wellies”. The most featured character was Todd Barlow.
Todd was a real Jack the Lad. If there was one of the lads to break a window with a cricket ball, or fall in the river taking everyone with him, or even scare the wits out of the other lads, you could guarantee it would be TB.
There were some truly excellent stories all told by the boy’s living legend - his beloved Grandfather
Sadly, the boy’s Grandfather passed away and the fondest memories that were left behind were those of the wonderful stories of his late Grandfather’s youth.
The stories by and of Victor Ashmore and Todd Barlow will never be forgotten. In remembrance of such a legend, the name Todd & Barlow was born. My Grandfather would have been very proud. The question I sometimes ask myself - was my Grandfather, in fact, Todd Barlow himself... or do you know better?
